Basics of Emergent “Church”:
Synonyms for The Emergent Church: Relativism, Emergents, Unitarianism.
The Emergents make the following dogmatic claims:
Postmodernism is absolutely right and every other opinion is absolutely wrong.
The Church has been culture bound. (This is true, but the emergents change one cultural bondage for a more entangled cultural bondage.)
Any doctrine or moral standard can be questioned. (This has been true since Satan tempted Eve with the words, “Hath God said . . . ?”)
No one has a foundation for truth. (The reality is that Jesus does have foundation for absolute truth. In fact, Jesus is the foundation.)
We must reexamine and question every belief and practice in the Church. (This is an excellent idea if we seek the Lord, Jesus, Christ for revelation and study the Scripture. In Christ, there is unfolding revelation that will reveal those areas of belief and practice where we have wandered from the Scriptural pattern. While this is not what this Emergent anti-Christ movement is about, it would be a good thing for Christians everywhere to seek God that He reveal, from the Bible, His holy pattern and to convict our hearts so we turn from any variation from that pattern.)
Emergents falsely claim that Biblical Christianity is modernism. (This, of course, is false. Modernism was Satan’s first attack against Jesus Christ. Post Modernism is the following attack against Jesus Christ.)
Emergents seek to capture a sacred feeling without ever touching the real Jesus.
(Emergents reveal a hypocrisy when they ask that everyone behave in a kind and open-minded manner toward them while they refuse to be open minded toward the Holy Ghost and the teachings of the Bible. They set up little rules in any way they like, but they should realize that postmodern relativism is self-refuting.)
Emergents claim that their ultimate goal is to make the world a better place. The Emerging movement envisions a utopia in which the oppressed of the world are free, the poor are no longer impoverished and the environment is clean. (If Emergents have the misfortune of receiving the power to create their humanistic utopia, it will follow the course of all the utopias of Hitler, Stalin, and many others.)
Unlike Christianity, Emergent “Church” defines the human mind as basically good and capable of generating knowledge without the benefit of observation or revelation. This self-generated knowledge is superior or equal to divine revelation, observation or both.
