Human Potential Movement’s Worldview Of The Solution To The Basic Human Problem

What is a cult?

The only sure way to avoid being deceived by a cult.

Human Potential Movement’s Worldview of the Solution to the Basic Human Problem:

HPM misses out on the work of Christ for atonement and the Holy Spirit to lead and give power for righteousness.  They don’t see God’s plan for delivering the human race from sin and the death, sickness, and disaster that follows from sin.

HPM thinks that each person can develop his or her "human potential", and this development will bring exceptional quality of life filled with happiness, creativity, and fulfillment. HPM thinks that those who begin to unleash their assumed "potential" will tend to help others to release their potential. Adherents think that humanity in its natural state is not selfish, greedy, or mean.

HPM claims that humans have infinite potential.  It then seeks to find that unlimited potential by the following:

  • Rejecting traditional beliefs and biblical concepts, claiming these would limit us.
  • Avoid any negative (as HPM defines negative) thoughts.
  • Daily affirmations and plain-English mantras.
  • Constant self-talk, generally some form of "I can and I will."
  • Many techniques to achieve altered states of consciousness thruough hypnosis, meditation, visualization, guided imagery, and other inward looking activities.
  • Most HPM groups mix helpful advice (real things that work) with occult practices cloaked in scientific language.
  • The altered states are often deceptively promoted as stress reduction.
  • Even séances and conjuring are hidden in some of the HPM techniques.  There are methods that could easily lead to demon possession, which might explain the way that some of our corporate, religious, and government organizations are run.
  • Many of the techniques are ancient occult methods, but the terminology has been changed to sound scientific and modern.

HPM thinks that awareness of what they term the "True Self" will bring about a master of "One's own reality."
