First of all, many if not most liberals probably are liberals because they are. It's just where they find themselves. Their friends are liberals or their parents are liberals or they have only heard one point of view.
Some liberals are liberal because they are getting some money out of the government, or their paycheck is somehow tied to a liberal organizations.
Many liberals may think they are liberal when they are non-liberal on most issues or at least on the core issue, which is the liberal doctrine of human goodness. They may be prolife, pro small government, pro fiscal responsibility, pro Christian, pro Christian morality, pro Bible, pro low taxes, and yet think that they are liberals. They may think that they are liberal and vote for liberals even though, on every issue, they are not liberal. You may even know of some Christians who think they are liberal. They may belong to a liberal union and they keep hearing the sales pitches of their union. They may watch the liberal media and believe what they are hearing from that source, or they may have been educated into liberalism by a university, yet not even understand what liberalism is all about.
The same could probably be said of conservatives. To be a Christian, however, you have to be born into the family. That involves repentance, having a new mind.
There are a lot of people who really don't have a clue, but they follow the crowd or at least continue in the direction in which they were traveling without knowing why. |
