I thought the soul was the spirit? What's the difference between them?

There Is A Difference Between The Soul And The Spirit.

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

There is a huge difference between the soul and spirit.  In our present state, we sometimes become confused between the two.  Those who are saved have had their spirits changed and joined to the Holy Spirit.  We can experience ever greater grace and power by the Holy Spirit.  He can move upon us.  He can flow through us.  He can guide us.  He can speak to us and teach us.  He can reveal the Word to us.  He can totally baptize (whelm or bury) us.  He can give us gifts of the Spirit.

The soul can be directed to follow the Spirit of God or to follow the flesh.  That's what Romans 6, 7, and 8 are all about.  The mind and will are associated with the soul.

The mind is the seat of the will. God has given us a free will. Satan cannot control our will and God will not control our will. God forces Himself on no one. As soon as we are born again by the blood of Jesus, we begin to learn to discern between our own soul and the leading of God. We begin to become familiar with the voice of Jesus. We can choose to direct our mind and will to the Spirit or to the flesh.

If you seek God, you will find Him through His Son, Jesus.

Revelations 22:19 And if anyone takes away from the Words of the Book of this prophecy, God will take away his part out of the Book of Life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which have been written in this Book.

John 10:35b the Scripture cannot be broken,

Human theology and reasoning is not necessarily correct, but the Bible is. The Bible can only be understood by revelation, and revelation is given by the Spirit of God. God does reveal in His own way. But we only know in part. If we think we know any thing, we do not know it as we ought. We are instructed, by God, to keep seeking Him. The Holy Spirit will lead us into all truth. The truth sets us free. Lies bind us. Whoever seeks Jesus does find Him. Jesus is the truth.

We believe the Holy Scriptures teach:
  • The 5 apostolic ministries (Ephesians 4:11)
  • The nine gifts of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:8-10)
  • Local congregations overseen by elders and deacons (Titus 1:5)
  • Every member having and being a ministry in the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:11)
  • Being led by the Spirit of God (Romans 8:14)
  • The gathering together of the Body of Christ (Genesis 49:10, John 17:21)
