1 Peter 3:15 3:15 Be Ready Always To Give An Answer To Every Man Who Asks You For A Reason For The Hope That Is In You With Gentleness And Respect |
1 Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man who asks you for a reason of the hope that is in you with gentleness and respect: Always be ready. That requires some preparation, doesn't it. It may interest you to know that faith is not blind. Faith has eyes--that's what real hope is all about. All faith that is real faith comes from God just as all love, wisdom, knowledge, hope, and righteousness come from God. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by an utterance from God. God speaks and faith comes from God. (some caveats about hearing God's Voice)
So how can you and I be ready at all times? The fact that you are reading these words is an indication that God is speaking to you and preparing your heart and making you ready. History holds examples of those who were not ready. The ACLU Lawyer Clarence Darrow asked William Jennings Bryan, "Did you ever discover where Cain got his wife?" The answer to this question is well known now, but Bryan was unable to give a coherent answer and proceeded to give an answer that made the Bible and Bryan look foolish. In fact, it should be obvious that Cain married his sister. This was not forbidden by God until long after mankind's fall into sin when the human genes had been damaged and marriage to close relatives would cause birth defects. Cain and his sister had undamaged genes, so there was no problem for Cain to marry his sister. Atheists borrow biblical morality to say that there is something wrong with this, but there clearly was not anything wrong with it until God forbade it. We can't always immediately know the answer to every question that Satan asks, but we can certainly look to Jesus for a word that does not come from our own corrupt minds. We can always have an answer if we are in the Spirit. The Spirit will lead us to be aware and to study the Scriptures and understand them as the example above points out. That answer may be, "If you are serious about your question, I can get an answer for you." Then, you can ask those who have been set in the Church to determine the doctrine. If you attend a church that follows the order of Scripture, then you will ask your elders. If they don't know the answer, they will ask the apostles, the traveling brethren who have authority to receive the doctrine from God. Otherwise, you may ask a pastor or a teacher in the organization to which you belong. There are excellent web sites on apologetics that deal with the trick questions of the anti-Christians, and you could study those web sites.
