Bible Dictionary: Define aion, Definition of aion

Definition:

Strong's Concordance gave the following meaning for Aion. 1) for ever, an unbroken age, perpetuity of time, eternity 2) the worlds, universe 3) period of time, age. That is quite a range of definitions. At first glance, it seems that there must be a mistake, and further investigation shows us that this is indeed a mistake. The word means Eon or Age. There are so many verses where the interpretation of eternity makes no sense that it cannot be eternity. Age, or Eon always makes sense. There is no context by which it does not make sense.

Problems with aion/eon

Sometimes, this word is translated as an age or eon. Sometimes it is translated as something indicating eternity. This conflict in the two conflicting translations centers on a misunderstanding of the logical law of non-contradiction. The law of non-contradiction is very simple. Two mutually exclusive things cannot both be true at the same time in the same sense. Here are two examples of where the problem is seen. "For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for [aion]." Matthew 6:13 Some say that the word, aion, cannot possibly mean an age because God's Kingdom has no end so that would constitute a contradiction. "Now all these things happened to them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of aion are come." Corinthians 10:11 Here, the supposed problem is that the word, aion could not possibly mean eternity because there is no end of eternity. In fact, in these cases, even translations that consistently translate "aion" as ever or eternity change the translation of the word to world or age.

Is it a contradiction to translate aion as age or eon in Matthew 6:13? If God is the God of eternity, is He the God of the ages as well? Yes. God is the God of all the ages. If God is the God of all the universe is He the God of you as well? Yes. God is the God of you and of the universe. There is no contradiction.

Is it a contradiction to translate aion as for ever or eternity in Corinthians 10:11? We don't fully understand eternity, yet we know that eternity has no end. There is a contradiction here.

The word, aion, is often used in a way that does not limit a length of time. An example would be, "For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for the eon." In King James, "the eon" is translated as "for ever." The fact that the kingdom and power and glory of God is for the eon does not mean that it is not eternal. It is eternal. This Scripture simply is one that does not say so. A theology has been developed that goes beyond the Bible on the one hand by saying such things as "there is no hell," "there is a hell, but hell is not all that bad," "God would never correct anyone through punishment," or "all ways lead to God." I'm sure that there are other examples of this extreme view. On the other hand, a robust theology has developed beyond the Bible that makes the Scripture conflict with itself. This is a problem if we are to believe the entire Bible. This extreme dogma causes some theologians to find extra-biblical reasons to rationalize away the Scriptures that plainly say such things as, "As in Adam all die, so in Christ shall all be made alive." Some people do not, as a result, believe in the restitution of all things, which is also a plain teaching of Scripture just as Hell is a plain teaching of Scripture. Sometimes, the best answer is, "We believe it all, but God has not yet told us how He is going to do this."

The claim of some is that, if the word is used to describe God's kingdom, power, and glory and God's life, then it must mean eternity, perpetuity of time and never ending. The reasoning, were it stated in clear terms, would say that God cannot be the God of the ages and still be the God of eternity. That is false, just as it is false to say that God cannot be my God and God of the Universe and God of the church. Man's reasoning is naturally flawed. If I tell you that my car will last a week and a tank of gas in the car lasts a week, are both of these claims true? Yes, they are both true. The fact that the car lasts a week and more does not make it less than true that my car lasts a week. So, the logic is flawed, raw human reasoning (the reasoning of the human mind without the Intelligence of the Creator flowing through the human mind) is not the means by which God reveals His word, and there are reasons that people promote false doctrine.

This is strong's definition. Keep in mind that lexicons and concordances are not the Bible. Neither are the writings of the Scholars or the teachings of the theologians. Truth must be revealed by God and that requires humility since we are always finding out that we have not really understood correctly in the past.

There are many who add to Scripture and remove from Scripture by the power of the natural mind. This happens with those who come from either extreme, the TULIP side or the Unitarian/Universalist side. (Read More)
