Bible Dictionary: Define aionios, Definition of aionios |
Definition:aionios is an adjective describing a certain type of life, a certain type of fire, etc. It means eonian: related to the age or eon, according to the age or eon, or of the age or eon. The word, aionios is the adjective form of the noun, aion, and the word, aion gives a more clear meaning or the word and what it means. It could also mean eonian, age-lasting, but that interpretation usually does not work with other Scriptures that make it clear that of the eon or age would be a better translation. There is considerable division in Babylon over the use of aionios. There are many who add to Scripture and remove from Scripture by the power of the natural mind. This happens with those who come from either extreme, the TULIP side or the Unitarian/Universalist side. (Read More) It is important to note that some things are eternal. Eternal life will not end either during time or in eternity. There are Scriptures that make this plain. However, those Scriptures that speak of eonian life should not be used to prove this. They are talking about a certain type of life. This is the life of the coming age, an uncreated life that goes into eternity. Sometimes, this word is translated as related to an age or eon. Sometimes it is translated as something indicating something that is eternal. This conflict in the two conflicting translations centers on a misunderstanding of the logical law of non-contradiction. The law of non-contradiction is very simple. Two mutually exclusive things cannot both be true at the same time in the same sense. Here are two examples of where the problem is seen. "But the God of all grace, who hath called us to His eonian aionios glory... " 1 Peter 5:10 Some claim that the word, aionios, cannot possibly mean an age because God's Kingdom has no end so that would constitute a contradiction. "In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the aionios time; " Titus 1:2 Here, the supposed problem is that the word, aion could not possibly mean eternity because there is no end of eternity. In fact, in these cases, even translations that consistently translate "aionios" as ever or eternity change the translation of the word to world or age. Is it a contradiction to translate aionios as of or related to an age or eon in 1 Peter 5:10? If God's glory is eternal, will it be throughout the ages? If God is the God of eternity, is He the God of the ages as well? Yes. God is the God of all the ages. If God is the God of all the universe is He the God of you as well? Yes. God is the God of you and of the universe. There is no contradiction. Is it a contradiction to translate aionios as for eternal in Titus 1:2? We don't fully understand eternity, yet we know that there cannot be a time before eternity. There is a contradiction here. Someone may say, "Well, then it should be translated differently in different places. Then, who decides what the translation is in each of those places, and how do they decide? The must decice either by revelation or by speculation. If one says to you that they have it by revelation, will you believe them? If someone is merely speculating or supposing, why should they believe tha they are correct? Problems arise whenever anyone goes beyond Scripture. That is, when anyone adds to Scripture or takes from Scripture. A theology has been developed that goes beyond the Bible on the one hand by saying such things as "there is no hell," "there is a hell, but hell is not all that bad," "God would never correct anyone through punishment," or "all ways lead to God." I'm sure that there are other examples of this extreme view. On the other hand, a robust theology has developed beyond the Bible that makes the Scripture conflict with itself. This is a problem if we are to believe the entire Bible. This extreme dogma causes some theologians to find extra-biblical reasons to rationalize away the Scriptures that plainly say such things as, "As in Adam all die, so in Christ shall all be made alive." Some people do not, as a result, believe in the restitution of all things, which is also a plain teaching of Scripture just as Hell is a plain teaching of Scripture. Sometimes, the best answer is, "We believe it all, but God has not yet told us how He is going to do this." We get some help form Strong's definitions--keep in mind that a concordance or a lexicon is not the Bible. It is an opinion. Strongs gives the following: 166 αιωνιος aionios ahee-o'-nee-os Suddenly, this part of the Bible makes sense when words are translated correctly. Matthew 18:8 Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into eonian fire.
