How Do We Know God?

If you stare at this picture, a giraffe will appear in a way that is just as obvious as the Almighty Creator God is obvious.

Stare and you will see the giraffe

It is amazing that some people are still wondering whether God exists while others of us are enjoying a wonderful and rich fellowship with God. Those who do not believe in God cannot see Him because they love to do their own will and do not want to do God's will. Those who do believe in the true God believe because they know Jesus Christ personally since they have humbled themselves and desired to do His will more than they have desired to do their own will. The only way that we can really know anything is by revelation.

God reveals Himself and His Nature to us.

This is not circular reasoning. This is not irrational. In fact, it is impossible to be fully rational without Jesus Christ. Also see: Seek to Know God.

Romans 1:18-21 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed [it] to them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified [him] not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Romans 1:19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God has showed it to them. 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: You see? You know because God has showed it to you and to all of us.

From this, we can see that God doesn't believe in atheists.

Psalm 97:6 The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory.

19:1-3-5... The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day to day uttereth speech, and night to night sheweth knowledge. [There is] no speech nor language, [where] their voice is not heard.

Of course, to a dogmatic Atheist, God cannot be seen. Yet, God is obvious and creation is obvious. No amount of evidence would convince them. God is obvious and creation is obvious, yet there is nothing that will turn them from their opinion since they are willingly ignorant.

A person who is evil will not accept God no matter what. "To try to explain truth to him who loves it not is but to give him more plentiful material for misinterpretation." George Macdonald If we are not prepared to buy the truth at the cost of our own humbling we shall not receive it. Lies have no price on them. They are cheap and they abound everywhere. But for the truth there is always a price to pay.

We say this to explain that you can answer this question for someone, yet, they will only receive it if they have a will to know the truth. Yes, they can know the truth, but only if they love the truth.

Those who have given much thought to spiritual things and yet persist in error are usually of the kind that have a hard heart toward God. The reason that their heart is hard is because they want to do what they want to do. They don't want to do God's will. Jesus tells us: "If you really want to obey God, you will know if what I teach comes from God or from Me." "He who hears you hears Me; and he who despises you despises Me; and he who despises Me despises Him Who sent Me." "There is a judge for the one who rejects Me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day" "For God did not send His Son into the world to separate the world for judgment; but that the world through Him might be rescued from destruction. He who believes into Him is not separated: but he who believes not is separated already, because he has not believed into the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the separation, that Light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, neither comes to the light, lest his deeds should be corrected. But he who does Truth comes to the Light, that his deeds may be made visible, that they are acquired through God." John 7:17, Luke 10:16, John 12:48, John 3:17-21 The fact is that the human mind does not work correctly unless it is flowing in the Anointing of the Holy Spirit in submission to the Holy Spirit.

It is not the Christian's responsibility to try to convince the ungodly person of the existence of God. The ungodly person knows that God exists and also knows quite a bit about God. The ungodly person hates God as shown by the fact that the ungodly person does not want to obey God. If they wanted to obey God, they would know God's voice when He speaks to them, whether through a Christian, the creation, the Bible, a vision or dream, their conscience, or some other way.

Romans 1:18-21 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed [it] to them. 2 Peter 3:3-7 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as [they were] from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved to fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

The points on this page may shake the faith of the Atheist in the precepts of Atheism, but the most important thing is that you share the Good News (Gospel). This is simple. All these other things may help, but it is the proclamation of the Gospel that transforms minds. See Give Them the Gospel.
