1 Then the Pharisees and certain of the scribes who came from Jerusalem came together to Him. 2 And when they saw some of His disciples eat bread with unholy, that is to say, with unwashed, hands, they found fault. 3 For the Pharisees and all the Jews, unless they wash their hands often, don't eat, holding the tradition of the elders. 4 And when they come from the market, unless they wash, they don't eat. And there are many other things that they have received to hold, such as the washing of cups and pots, bronze vessels, and tables. 5 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, "Why don't your disciples walk according to the tradition of the elders but eat bread with unwashed hands?" 6 He answered, saying to them, "Isaiah has prophesied of you hypocrites well, as it is written, 'These people honor Me with their lips, but their innermost minds are far from Me. 7 However that may be, they worship Me fruitlessly, teaching the commandments of men for doctrines.' 8 For, laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups, and you do many other such things." 9 And He said to them, "You reject the commandment of God while commending yourselves so that you may keep your own tradition. 10 For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother; and, whoever curses father or mother, let him die the death.' 11 But you say, 'If a man shall say to his father or mother, 'It is Corban,' that is to say, a gift, 'by whatever you might be profited by me.' he shall be free." 12 And you don't allow him to do anything more for his father or his mother, 13 making the utterance of God of no effect through your tradition which you have delivered, and you do many such things." 14 And when He had called all the people to Himself, He said to them, "Every one of you listen to Me and understand: 15 There is nothing from outside of a person that, entering into him, can defile him, but the things that come out of him, those are the things that defile the person. 16 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear." 17 And when He had entered into the house from the people, His disciples asked Him about the parable. 18 And He said to them, "Are you without understanding in the same way also? Don't you perceive that whatever thing enters into the person from outside, it cannot defile him 19 because it doesn't enter into His innermost mind but into the belly and goes out into the sewer, purifying all food?" 20 And He said, "That which comes out of the person is what defiles the person. 21 For from within, out of the innermost mind of people, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: 23 All these evil things come from within and defile the person." 24 And from there He arose and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon and entered into a house and desired to have no man know it, but He could not be hidden. 25 For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of Him and came and fell at His feet: 26 The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation, and she begged Him that He would drive the devil out of her daughter. 27 But Jesus said to her, "Let the children first be filled, for it is not praiseworthy to take the children's food and to throw it to the dogs." 28 And she answered, saying to Him, "Yes, Lord, yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs." 29 And He said to her, "For this utterance go your way; the devil has gone out of your daughter." 30 And when she had come to her house, she found the devil gone out and her daughter laid on the bed. 31 And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, He came to the sea of Galilee, through the middle of the coasts of Decapolis. 32 And they brought one who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech to Him, and they begged Him to lay His Hand on him. 33 And He took him aside from the crowd and put His fingers into his ears, and He spit and touched his tongue. 34 And looking up to Heaven, He sighed and said to him, "Ephphatha." that is, "Be opened." 35 And immediately his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plainly. 36 And He commanded them that they should tell no one, but the more He commanded them, the more they proclaimed it with authority 37 and were exceedingly astonished, saying, "He has done all things well; He makes both the deaf to hear and the dumb to speak."
