We have heard much about values, morals, and ethics. In general, these are the new slippery laws. Self-defined laws may be called my many names: principles, methods, techniques, tools, ways to maximize your time and personal effectiveness, habits, practices, or systems. There are many other names for "law," and you can get out your thesaurus and certainly find more names, but you get the idea. The law God gave was ineffective because humanity is flawed and unable to perfectly execute the laws. Because of the human condition, the fallen condition, human beings are in slavery to Satan and to human passions and desires. The law that came from God is perfect, and holy, and good, but we can't obey it. If someone, not wanting to follow God's laws, decides to live by a self-defined set of laws, not only is there a problem with the inability to follow even the self-defined laws but the new self-defined laws are impure and subject to change as soon as they become inconvenient. With either set of laws, how easy it is to rationalize and justify ourselves when we fall short!
Most of the self-defined laws leave out the first and most important commandment and so they allow the worst and most terrible sin. That commandment is: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and all your might. God is love, so if we could do this one, then all the rest would fall into place, wouldn't it? Since Jesus overcame death to set us free from all these types of laws and to fulfill God's law in us, why don't we look at the option of taking Jesus up on His offer?
