How can we know anything about anythingTo try to explain truth to him who loves it not is but to give him more plentiful material for misinterpretation. George Macdonald Do we have to make a choice between science and the Bible? NO! That is NOT where the problem is, but that is what everyone seems to want to talk about. Take science as an example. How can we know anything about the created material world around us? How can we know anything from what we can see using natural sciences? We all see the same things in the material world, but we don't come to the same answers. Why is that? How can we know anything about the Bible and what it teaches? Every person believes different things about the Bible and how it should be read. Why is that? Same scientific facts. Different answers. Same Bible. Different answers. Why is that? The true question is this: How do we come to our answers that we get from what we can see through science or what we can read in the Bible? How do we think about what we see using science or what we read in the Bible? How do we analyze what we have seen and read? How do we interpret what we have seen and read? We use logic, but logic always has a foundation. Jesus talked about building on the Rock. That Rock is Jesus Christ. He is the true foundation. There are also the false foundations of the ungodly. An example might help. Question: Why do you believe in evolution? Answer: Because my science teacher told me that evolution is scientific fact. Question: Why do you believe your science teacher? Answer: because he agrees with the textbook he assigned us to read. Now, we have asked, "Why?" twice. If we continued to ask, "Why?" we would come down to the foundation of this person's thoughts. When we get down to the foundations, there are no more questions that can be answered. So where to the foundations come from? There are three possibilities.
Question: Why do you believe in creation? Answer: Because God revealed this to me. He spoke to me through the Bible and gave me His faith so that I could believe Him. See how quickly we got to the foundation. This is a belief that has a foundation that is solid and that cannot be moved. In reality, the things that we make up, that are pulled from the air, are actually from demons and all the lies of demons spring from the prince of demons, Satan. So these are one and the same. Divine revelation comes from the Almighty, Creator, God, Jesus Christ. So there are only two choices, but how do we know there are only two choices? Because God has revealed this truth to us. The question then is how do we tell the difference between the revelation that comes from God and the lies of Satan? The answer is that everyone who sincerely wants to do the will of God will know. Jesus said, "If you really want to obey God, you will know if what I teach comes from God or from me" The rejection of the revelation that comes from God is not an intellectual problem. It is a moral problem. Jesus said, "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you: For everyone who asks receives; and he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks it shall be opened." Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to those who ask him? Matthew 7:7-11 You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. You can set the truth before someone, but you can't make anyone believe those things that they don't want to submit to. They have to want to obey God. How frequently it is brought to our attention that nothing good can be done if the will is wrong! Reason alone fails to justify itself. Richard M. Weaver Jesus said, "You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (John 8:32) "If we are not prepared to buy the truth at the cost of our own humbling we shall not receive it" Lies appear to have no price upon them. They seem cheap and they abound everywhere. But for the truth there is always an obvious price to pay. "[God] has set a day when He will judge all the world's people with fairness. When we hear them, we hear Jesus Christ, and we either accept or reject. Every person who follows Jesus Christ is commanded to only speak His utterances and not their own. "When we love others, we know that we belong to the truth, and we feel at ease in the presence of God" (1 John 3:19) Ravi Zacharias did two open forums in a university. On the second night, one man told him that he had brought two Atheists in the night before who said that the arguments presented were so strong that they could not contend with them, but they were going to remain Atheists because that is what they prefer to be true. In another case of just listening to an unbeliever and drawing out his reasoning, the unbeliever finally came to his foundations. They turned out to be assumptions that were pulled from the air. When asked why he believed his basic assumption, the unbeliever looked startled and blurted out, "I guess I'm making the whole thing up." It was quite a revelation to him since he hadn't even known that he had any assumptions. However, he decided to remain an Atheist because he didn't want God to rule over him. Definition:Converted (KJV) is the same as "turn around" whether the word is used in the Old or in the New Testament. The English word, repent, means "turn around." However, the word, repent, is translated from a differnt word that means "have a new mind." Converted and repent are not the same thing.
To convert is often used to mean turning to God. Ac 3:19 says, "Repent ye therefore, and be converted" In normal English, that would read, "Have a new mind, therefore, and turn to God." Understanding the way that faith works to bring us to grace for righteousness, which leads to holiness and redemption (a new mind), this makes a lot of sense. Faith comes by hearing. That means that God speaks, as the Bible says repeatedly that He does speak. We turn toward Him (convert) that we can listen. It is an act of honor, acknowledgement, and submission. If a friend is talking while the TV is making noise, you turn toward your friend. In the same way, God is speaking while your own carnal nature is making noise, and you turn toward God. This is an act of the will. You set your mind on Him and His voice. This is when faith comes. Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word [literally, utterance] of God. Then, faith gives you access into grace [literally the free gift]. The free gift of righteousness does the works as you submit and yield your members to this grace. Since you reap what you sow, and this is the only way that you can sow to the Spirit, good seeds are sown in your heart, which changes what you are. This is holiness and redemption. This is having a new mind, which is translated as the English word, repentance.
To use another analogy from Scripture, you have looked into the perfect law of liberty and you have seen what you look like as if looking in a mirror. What you saw was the New Man, the Spiritual Man Who is being formed in you. This is the real you. You are aware that you have a fleshly nature, but that is the old Adam hanging on the cross. You are dead to the old self and alive to the New Man. Christ is being formed in you. He is there, but He is being formed. When you look into the perfect law of liberty, you do not want to be a forgetful hearer but a doer. When you see Christ in this way, you see Him as He is and so you become like Him. As we all with the veil pulled from our faces behold, as in a mirror, the glory of the Lord, we are changed into the same image from glory to glory even as by the Spirit of the Lord. This is holiness and redemption, line upon line, here a little, and there a little. The path of the just is as a shining light that shines more and more until the perfect Day. Note that this always seems to occur in the passive voice: be converted. That indicates that even the turning toward God is performed by the Holy Spirit. I suppose that we would even boast about that small act otherwise.

Jer 3:14 Turn <07725>, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion: Jer 3:19 But I said, How shall I put thee among the children, and give thee a pleasant land, a goodly heritage of the hosts of nations? and I said, Thou shalt call me, My father; and shalt not turn away <07725> from me. Jer 3:22 Return <07725>, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the LORD our God. Jer 4:1 If thou wilt return <07725>, O Israel, saith the LORD, return <07725> unto me: and if thou wilt put away thine abominations out of my sight, then shalt thou not remove. Jer 4:8 For this gird you with sackcloth, lament and howl: for the fierce anger of the LORD is not turned back <07725> from us. Jer 4:28 For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black: because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and will not repent, neither will I turn back <07725> from it. Jer 11:10 They are turned back <07725> to the iniquities of their forefathers, which refused to hear my words; and they went after other gods to serve them: the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant which I made with their fathers. Jer 18:4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again <07725> another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. Jer 18:8 If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn <07725> from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them. Jer 18:11 Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return <07725> ye now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good. Jer 18:20 Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them, and to turn away <07725> thy wrath from them. Jer 23:20 The anger of the LORD shall not return <07725>, until he have executed, and till he have performed the thoughts of his heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it perfectly. Jer 23:22 But if they had stood in my counsel, and had caused my people to hear my words, then they should have turned <07725> them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings. Jer 24:6 For I will set mine eyes upon them for good, and I will bring them again <07725> to this land: and I will build them, and not pull them down; and I will plant them, and not pluck them up. Jer 24:7 And I will give them an heart to know me, that I am the LORD: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: for they shall return <07725> unto me with their whole heart. Jer 25:5 They said, Turn ye again <07725> now every one from his evil way, and from the evil of your doings, and dwell in the land that the LORD hath given unto you and to your fathers for ever and ever: Jer 26:3 If so be they will hearken, and turn <07725> every man from his evil way, that I may repent me of the evil, which I purpose to do unto them because of the evil of their doings. Jer 27:16 Also I spake to the priests and to all this people, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Hearken not to the words of your prophets that prophesy unto you, saying, Behold, the vessels of the LORD’S house shall now shortly be brought again <07725> from Babylon: for they prophesy a lie unto you. Jer 28:6 Even the prophet Jeremiah said, Amen: the LORD do so: the LORD perform thy words which thou hast prophesied, to bring again <07725> the vessels of the LORD’S house, and all that is carried away captive, from Babylon into this place. Jer 29:10 For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return <07725> to this place. Jer 31:23 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; As yet they shall use this speech in the land of Judah and in the cities thereof, when I shall bring again <07725> their captivity; The LORD bless thee, O habitation of justice, and mountain of holiness. Jer 32:37 Behold, I will gather them out of all countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again <07725> unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely: Jer 32:40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away <07725> from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me. Jer 33:7 And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return <07725>, and will build them, as at the first. Jer 33:11 The voice of joy, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the voice of them that shall say, Praise the LORD of hosts: for the LORD is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: and of them that shall bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the LORD.
