Bible Dictionary: Define olam or owlam, Definition of olam or owlam

Definition of olam or owlam:

Long Duration

Strongs [05769] says that this word can mean any of the following: long duration, antiquity, futurity, for ever, ever, everlasting, evermore, perpetual, old, ancient, world

By context, there is no place in the Bible that is in conflict with the definition: long duration.  This translation may, at times, conflict with theologies but not with the Bible itself.

In many areas, translating this word as anything that means eternal does cause conflicts, either making the Bible conflict with itself or else making the Bible into nonsense through raw human reasoning (the reasoning of the human mind without the Intelligence of the Creator flowing through the human mind) and theological interpretation from the original language.  Unfortunately, many of the translations create such supposed conflicts.  There are, in fact, no conflicts or errors in the Bible.

Some things are eternal. Eternal life will not end either during time or in eternity. The Triune God is eternal.  There are Scriptures that make this plain.  However, those Scriptures such as Psalm 9:7 "But the LORD shall endure for ever " should not be used to prove this. They are talking about a certain type of life. This is the life of the coming age, an uncreated life that goes into eternity.

Problems arise whenever anyone goes beyond Scripture.  That is, when anyone adds to Scripture or takes from Scripture.

A theology has been developed that goes beyond the Bible on the one hand by saying such things as "there is no hell," "there is a hell, but hell is not all that bad," "God would never correct anyone through punishment," or "all ways lead to God."  I'm sure that there are other examples of this extreme view.  On the other hand, a robust theology has developed beyond the Bible that makes the Scripture conflict with itself.  This is a problem if we are to believe the entire Bible.  This extreme dogma causes some theologians to find extra-biblical reasons to rationalize away the Scriptures that plainly say such things as, "As in Adam all die, so in Christ shall all be made alive."  Some people do not, as a result, believe in the restitution of all things, which is also a plain teaching of Scripture just as Hell is a plain teaching of Scripture.  Sometimes, the best answer is, "We believe it all, but God has not yet told us how He is going to do this."
