Statements that question your sanity or your intellegence are playground bullying, but probably the most common illogical argument of the ungodly is to call thegodly stupid or to imply stupidity or irrationality. There is nothing wrong with pointing out a logical error. This is usually a tactic of those who are insincere and merely trolling, that is, they troll for Christians as one would troll for fish, with provocative statements or questions but a mind that is totally closed and set on destruction. Here is a page on how to handle trolling.
If you, as a follower of Christ, are conversing with unbelievers, you will run across many logical errors--too many to deal with. If you choose to point the logical errors out, be gentle. Sometimes, it may be easier to just get to the point and ignore the errors. However, when you meet these bullies, and you will meet them if you are walking with Jesus, they will claim stupidity or irrationality for no reason at all. They can't even back up their statements. On the other hand, if you do make an illogical statement, remember that everyone does this sometimes. Admit your mistake and go on with the conversation. Speak the truth in love. When it becomes apparent that the unbeliever has set his or her will against God, there is no sense in continuing the conversation. "To try to explain truth to him who loves it not is but to give him more plentiful material for misinterpretation." George Macdonald
An easy way to handle these people is to tell them the truth:
Whatever they come back with will consist of made-up stories (lies), arbitrary assumptions (lies), or irrational statements (insanity). This is true whether they say "Evolution is science," "There is no God," "God doesn't speak to you," "You are stupid," "You don't understand science," "I don't have enough evidence to believe," "There is no evidence for God," or any other thing, so just say some variation of the following:
One thing that you will find is that most of them have know idea how logic works. If they do understand the laws of logic, they have been breaking them so long that their bad habits are out of control. Christ will not tell you to bully them back. Christ will not tell you to get into an angry argument with them. You can point out their poor arguments without being rude. They still won't like it and they are likely to be rude. As this is being written, the writer is remembering two supposed "intellectuals" at the University talking to each other. One said, "My sister just became and evangelical." The other replied, "Oh yes, my sister became an evangelical and I just avoid her now." "Well, my sister keeps wrecking her car. Shows you how intelligent she is." "Maybe she is just doing it so she can praise the Lord that she has been delivered." These snide remarks are cruel, bigoted, and irrational. A person who doesn't want to obey God will be irrational to avoid it.
Here is a quote from someone who wrote to SeekFind.net:
"While it is REALLY a total waste of time to use Logic when talking to Programmed Religious Robots like you, I will waste a some of it."
We had been writing back and forth for some time. From what this person was writing, it appeared that he has had no training at all in logic. Yet he accused all who are having an ongoing relationship with God in which God leads us and we follow in loving submission to Him of not being able to use logic. He made this accusation without regard to any law of logic. When asked what rules of logic had been supposedly violated, the man couldn't answer but started writing in all capitals (shouting, I suppose) and he just continued with attacks that would fit a person who was pre-teen and had received no training. The man was elderly. We suggested that he take a course in logic. Such a course would not have any affect on his godlessness, but he would find it very helpful in avoiding poor arguments.
There are no logical defenses for the arguments of Atheists. As you talk to them and seek God's wisdom, God will show you that their talk is like vapor. There is nothing underneath it. At first, some of the arguments may seem credible, but when you dig in, you will find that every one of them melts away.
The reason that people turn from God is because they want to fit in. They don't like to be labeled as stupid by those around them. The "stupid" card works very well for the slaves of Satan, and they use it a lot. The reality is that there is a cost to following Christ. For some of us, they will take our lives. Millions of followers of Christ are being killed around the world for their faith. Others are being discriminated against at work. Others are being shunned by their families. Some are beaten. Jesus tells us to count the cost and make sure that we are willing to walk this way.
Sadly, Christian evolutionists resort to this same low level. The same applies to anyone who uses such tactics. Don't you use these tactics. Speak by the Holy Spirit or not at all. "When evolution is seen as a storytelling game rather than a serious attempt at scientific explanation, it suddenly makes sense."
