1 John Chapter 3

Study Notes

King James Version

Young's Literal Translation

1 Perceive with your eyes the kind of love the Father has bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the ordered system does NOT know us, because it did NOT know Him.
2 Beloved, now we are the sons of God, and what we shall be has not yet been made obviously visible: but we know that, when He shall be made visible, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is. *
3 And every man that has this hope in him purifies himself, even as He is pure.
4 Whoever commits sin also transgresses the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. *
5 And you know that He was made visible to take away our sins; and in Him is no sin.
6 Whoever abides in Him does NOT sin: whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.
7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he who does righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous. *
8 He who commits sin is of the devil; for the devil sins from the beginning. For this purpose the Mature Son of God was made visible, that He might destroy the works of the devil.
9 Whoever is born of God does not commit sin; for His seed remains in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. *
10 In this the children of God are plainly known, and the children of the devil: whoever doesn’t do righteousness is not of God, and neither is he who does NOT love his brother.
11 For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And why did he slay him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.
13 Don't marvel, my brothers, if the ordered system hates you.
14 We know that we have passed from death into life, because we love the brothers. He who does NOT love his brother abides in death.
15 Whoever hates his brother is a murderer: and you know that no murderer has eonian life (the life of the coming eon) abiding in him.
16 By this we perceive the love of God, because He laid down His life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
17 But whoever has this ordered system's goods, and sees his brother has a need, and shuts up his compassion from him, how does the love of God dwell in him?
18 My little children, let us not love in utterance, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
19 And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him.
20 For if our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our hearts, and knows all things.
21 Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, then have we confidence toward God.
22 And whatever we ask, we receive of Him because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.
23 And this is His commandment, That we should believe on the name of His Mature Son Jesus Christ and love one another as He gave us commandment.
24 And He who keeps His commandments dwells in Him, and He in him. And hereby we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit which He has given us.
1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
12 Not as Cain, [who] was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.
13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not [his] brother abideth in death.
15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
16 Hereby perceive we the love [of God], because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down [our] lives for the brethren.
17 But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels [of compassion] from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.
20 For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, [then] have we confidence toward God.
22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
1 See ye what love the Father hath given to us, that children of God we may be called; because of this the world doth not know us, because it did not know Him;
2 beloved, now, children of God are we, and it was not yet manifested what we shall be, and we have known that if he may be manifested, like him we shall be, because we shall see him as he is;
3 and every one who is having this hope on him, doth purify himself, even as he is pure.
4 Every one who is doing the sin, the lawlessness also he doth do, and the sin is the lawlessness,
5 and ye have known that he was manifested that our sins he may take away, and sin is not in him;
6 every one who is remaining in him doth not sin; every one who is sinning, hath not seen him, nor known him.
7 Little children, let no one lead you astray; he who is doing the righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous,
8 he who is doing the sin, of the devil he is, because from the beginning the devil doth sin; for this was the Son of God manifested, that he may break up the works of the devil;
9 every one who hath been begotten of God, sin he doth not, because his seed in him doth remain, and he is not able to sin, because of God he hath been begotten.
10 In this manifest are the children of God, and the children of the devil; every one who is not doing righteousness, is not of God, and he who is not loving his brother,
11 because this is the message that ye did hear from the beginning, that we may love one another,
12 not as Cain -- of the evil one he was, and he did slay his brother, and wherefore did he slay him? because his works were evil, and those of his brother righteous.
13 Do not wonder, my brethren, if the world doth hate you;
14 we -- we have known that we have passed out of the death to the life, because we love the brethren; he who is not loving the brother doth remain in the death.
15 Every one who is hating his brother -- a man-killer he is, and ye have known that no man-killer hath life age-during in him remaining,
16 in this we have known the love, because he for us his life did lay down, and we ought for the brethren the lives to lay down;
17 and whoever may have the goods of the world, and may view his brother having need, and may shut up his bowels from him -- how doth the love of God remain in him?
18 My little children, may we not love in word nor in tongue, but in word and in truth!
19 and in this we know that of the truth we are, and before Him we shall assure our hearts,
20 because if our heart may condemn -- because greater is God than our heart, and He doth know all things.
21 Beloved, if our heart may not condemn us, we have boldness toward God,
22 and whatever we may ask, we receive from Him, because His commands we keep, and the things pleasing before Him we do,
23 and this is His command, that we may believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and may love one another, even as He did give command to us,
24 and he who is keeping His commands, in Him he doth remain, and He in him; and in this we know that He doth remain in us, from the Spirit that He gave us.

1 John Chapter 3

Human theology and reasoning is not necessarily correct, but the Bible is without error. The Bible can only be understood by revelation, and revelation is given by the Spirit of God. God does reveal in His own way. But we only know in part. If we think we know any thing, we do not know it as we ought. We are instructed, by God, to keep seeking Him. The Holy Spirit will lead us into all truth. The truth sets us free. Lies bind us. Whoever seeks Jesus does find Him. Jesus is the truth.

We believe the Holy Scriptures teach:
  • The 5 apostolic ministries (Ephesians 4:11)
  • The nine gifts of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:8-10)
  • Local congregations overseen by elders and deacons (Titus 1:5)
  • Every member having and being a ministry in the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:11)
  • Being led by the Spirit of God (Romans 8:14)
  • The gathering together of the Body of Christ (Genesis 49:10, John 17:21)
