General Rule Fallacy

General Rule Fallacy

The general rule fallacy is one of the many smokescreens that are used to cover the fact that the reasoning is based on one of the three fallacies of Agrippa's trilemma. Whenever a logical fallacy is committed, the fallacy has its roots in Agrippa's trilemma. All human thought (without Divine revelation) is based on one of three unhappy possibilities. These three possibilities are infinite regress, circular reasoning, or axiomatic thinking. This problem is known as Agrippa's trilemma. Some have claimed that only logic and math can be known without Divine revelation; however, that is not true. There is no reason to trust either logic or math without Divine revelation. Science is also limited to the pragmatic because of the weakness on human reasoning, which is known as Agrippa's trilemma.

The General Rule Fallacy occurs when it is assumed that things are a certain way in most cases, and, therefore, it is that way in a particular case. It is a form of hasty generalization.

Examples of the General Rule Fallacy

"You can trust this salesman. He has a cross on his lapel."

There are some sales people who can spot a Christian and adapt their dress and speech to close the sale. Don't assume that, just because someone is a Christian or appears to be a Christian, that they will be honest.

"I'm safe going out with Jim. He's the preacher's son."

There is no guarantee that Jim is walking with Jesus. Perhaps it might be a good idea to find out what Jim is all about before getting into a car with him alone.
