Native American Religions

There are several religions that are commonly known as "Native American religions;" however, religions are not given to any race. In fact, God created all people of one race. There are no races. And there is no race who is stuck with any religion. There are no Native American religions. There are no black religions. There are no white religions. Jesus Christ welcomes all people to Himself. In fact, some Native American communities are mostly Christ followers. With any people group, when there have been other religious practices previously, there are usually examples of the teachings of Christ being mixed in with the previously followed practices, even occult practices. This is also true in Native American religions.

The Native American religions are really quite diverse, but we have tried to generalize. It would be good for the reader to realize that there are exceptions to what is written here.

What are commonly referred to as Native American Religions generally see all of life as interconnected, but not in Christ Jesus.  A factor is generally the belief that objects, plants, and animals are possessed by spirits and that those spirits must be appeased through occult methods.  These religions certainly do promote much occult practice.

Followers of Native American Religions don't realize that Jesus is divine, Savior, or true God and true man. They do realize that there is a personal Supreme Being (many refer to the "Great Spirit") who is Creator and beneficent and who empowers lesser spiritual beings; of course, the devils also believe and tremble. The lesser spiritual beings would, no doubt, be angels who still serve God and those who have fallen.

Followers of Native American Religions lose out on the true authority of the Bible and the leading of the Holy Spirit to unveil the interpretation of the Bible. They also miss the authority of the biblical church order to safeguard revelation. Instead, they follow Oral & written tradition, folklore, and the accumulated wisdom of the tribe.

Followers of Native American Religions don't have the knowledge that humanity is lost and in need of the Savior, Jesus Christ.

Followers of Native American Religions don't understand that sin has separated us from the true God and that there is no way, other than through the salvation that God has provided through Jesus, that we can be reconciled to God.

Followers of Native American Religions depend on human-generated righteousness.

There are obvious parallels between New Age, the occult, and most Native American Religions.

While followers of so-called Native American Religions often have spiritual experiences where they see spirits and receive guidance from these fallen angels, Christianity is based on Jesus Christ, the Living Christ, Who reveals Himself to the Christian on an ongoing basis.  Believer's have the supernatural trust that is a gift from God.  By this trust, we see Jesus and hear His Voice.  It is Jesus Himself who reveals to us that the Bible is His Word, His Utterance.  And it is Jesus Himself Who speaks to us through His Word.   Jesus speaks to us through many different means: Scripture, intuition, bringing Scripture to our remembrance, apostles, prophets, etc.  When God speaks to us, faith comes and with faith comes a vision of hope.  This vision shows us who we are in Christ in an ever-more-clear understanding.  When God speaks, He instructs us what to think, what to say, and what to do.  Then, He does the work through us by His grace, His free gift of righteousness.  This righteousness of God in us is the moving of the Holy Spirit that transfigures us from glory to glory to be like Jesus, killing our fleshly nature and causing Christ to be more fully formed in us.  And this death to self, to the old adamic sin nature, and building up of Christ is the very thing that redeems us, sets us free from slavery to the fleshly nature, to Satan, to the pressures of the world, and to death. (some caveats about hearing God's Voice)

Native American Occult Religion 's Worldview of a Supreme Being Back to Top Followers of Native American Religions say that there is a personal supreme being who is creator, often called the great spirit, and beneficent and who empowers lesser spiritual beings, but the devils also believe and tremble.  They do, however, mix in much magic and invoking of spirits.  There is a common belief in animism and spiritism.

Native American Occult Religion 's Worldview of the Solution to the Human Problem Back to Top Followers of Native American Religions miss out on the work of Christ for atonement and the Holy Spirit to lead and give power for righteousness. They don't see God's plan for delivering the human race from sin and the death, sickness, and disaster that follows from sin.

Followers of Native American Religions don't realize that salvation is available only through Jesus Christ and His work on the cross, and that salvation is the source of good thoughts, words, and actions by the power of the Spirit of God.

Followers of Native American Religions miss the understanding of the need to submit to God--to let God have His way in them--so that God can do His works through them.

Most of the Native American value systems are based on the well-being of the tribe, with individuals expected to fulfill their social roles in the tribe and to follow the traditions of the tribe.
