Is Socialism/Communism A System Based On Envy, Which Is Covetousness

It can be.  Some people do favor Socialism because of envy.  Some people even favor Socialism because they don't want to work.  "For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice." James 3:16  On the other hand, some people favor free enterprise because they want to use the freedom to get money in an immoral way.  A Christian must be aware of his or her own motivations.

Christians who reason for or against Socialism are sometimes reasonable and sometimes irrational.  One motivation that is irrational is the argument that is based on envy or covetousness, both of which go against the precepts of Jesus Christ.  Another motivation that is irrational for a Christian is the motivation to protect one's own property from the State.   The reason this is irrational is because Jesus gave command to give our cloak as well when the government asks for our coat.  Some of the arguments that are seen on both the socialist and the non-Socialist sides are taken from Atheistic philosophies.

Scripture on covetousness:

Exodus 20:17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor's.

Romans 13:8-15 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.  And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.  The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.  Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering [promiscuity] and wantonness [unclean behaviour], not in strife and envying.  But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

Romans 7:8, 11-15, 18, 23-25  But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence [coveting]. For without the law sin was dead. ... For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me. Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.  Was then that which is good made death to me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful. For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.  For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. ... For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.... But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?  I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

Philippians 1:15 Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:

Proverbs 14:30 A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.

Proverbs 23:17 Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear [deep respect] of the LORD all the day long.

note: envy is a form of idolatry

Proverbs 27:4  Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?

1 Timothy 6:3-11 If any man teacheth otherwise, and consenteth not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the doctrine which is according to godliness, He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.  But godliness with contentment is great gain.  For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.  And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.  But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.  For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith.  Click here to learn more." href="http://www.SeekFind.net/Bible_Dictionary__Define_Faith__Definition_of_Faith.html">faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.  But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

I you, as a Christian, feel envy toward the rich, this is covetousness. If you, as a Christian, are not helping those who are less fortunate than you (not trying to get the government to do it but doing it yourself) you are missing a blessing. He who gives to the poor lends to the Lord and the Lord shall repay him.
