Isaiah 59:1-4  Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness.  None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.

Jeremiah 5:25 Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you.  
 
Micah 3:4 (KJV)  Then shall they cry to the Lord, but he will not hear them: he will even hide his face from them at that time, as they have behaved themselves ill in their doings.  

God will not fellowship with darkness.  You have to be totally holy to have fellowship with God.  Jesus changes the relationship.  When you accept Jesus, you are born into the family of God.  God treats you as a growing child, to be taught and to learn to be like Him.  He gives you the Holy Spirit so that you can do two things: first to even want to do His will ans second to do His will.  When you are born again, you become two people.  God sees you as the Christ in you.  He does not know you after the flesh any more.  And that is how you should see yourself, too.  That is also the way that you should see other Christians.  If you see things this way, you are seeing reality.  

If you are not born again, you can be one of those who is born again.  You can be washed perfectly clean.
