v11 Apples of Gold in Pictures of Silver

This Scripture, Proverbs 25:11 "A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver."

This Scripture is quite a challenge to understand. It means much more than simple advice that we ought to speak well and that this is somehow good.

  • The word is that word that is imparted by God at the right moment. It is the utterance from the throne of God.
  • It is fitly spoken because it is spoken in the Spirit. In other words, Grace does the work of uttering the word through us. Literally, the word, "fitly," is Hebrew word for wheel, the same word that was used for Ezekiel's vision of the wheels and the living creatures that moved at the direction of the Holy Spirit.
  • When that word is fitly spoken, it is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.
    • Apples are a fruit, and gold is a type of deity. In Song 2:5, the bride says to the Bridegroom, "Stay me with flagons, comfort me with apples: for I am sick of love." This is the fruit of the Spirit.
    • Pictures are visions or representations of reality. The Hebrew word used here signifies an image or imagination or picture. God created the imagination to receive the vision of hope from God. That vision of hope always pulls away the veil to reveal the Kingdom of God and how those who hear God's voice fit into His Kingdom.
    • Silver is redemption, and redemption is being set free from the bondage of sin and the sinful nature.

So an utterance that comes from God and that is spoken by the unction of the Holy Spirit is like the fruit of the Spirit that is seen in a vision of freedom from the devil, the world, and our sinful flesh and fully functioning as a member in the Body of Christ, which is the New Jerusalem or the Kingdom of the Heavens.

This has to do with the perfect law of liberty. When a man has faith but no works, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror and immediately forgets what he looks like. Every time God leads us, we look into that mirror of the perfect law of liberty. We see ourselves not after the flesh but as the ministry, the Christ within, and we see something of how we fit into Christ the Body. When we see Him in this way, we are changed to be like Him in some small portion, and this continues from glory to glory.
