Logical Fallacy of Appeal to Infinite Possibilities
The logical fallacy of appeal to infinite possibilities is one of the many smokescreens that are used to cover the fact that the reasoning is based on one of the three fallacies of Agrippa's trilemma. Whenever a logical fallacy is committed, the fallacy has its roots in Agrippa's trilemma. All human thought (without Divine revelation) is based on one of three unhappy possibilities. These three possibilities are infinite regress, circular reasoning, or axiomatic thinking. This problem is known as Agrippa's trilemma. Some have claimed that only logic and math can be known without Divine revelation; however, that is not true. There is no reason to trust either logic or math without Divine revelation. Science is also limited to the pragmatic because of the weakness on human reasoning, which is known as Agrippa's trilemma.
The Logical Fallacy of Appeal to Infinite Possibilities occurs when it is asserted that something is possible because nothing is impossible.
Examples of the Logical Fallacy of Appeal to Infinite Possibilities
“it’s possible that the Creation created itself from nothing, therefore it did. If you disagree, prove me wrong.”
“it’s not impossible that the Creation created itself from nothing, therefore it did. If you disagree, prove me wrong.”
Scientific arguments in favor of the Big-Bang-Billions-of-Years-No-Flood-Molecules-to-Man story try to prove possibility rather than trying to prove that it actually happened. The idea is that if it is possible, then it happened. For Secularist science, there is no other option that to appeal to infinite possibilities, since the problems with the favored story would automatically have discredited it if it were not absolutely necessary for a rationalism of Atheism. Of course, without Divine revelation, Agrippa's Trilemma is in play, which doesn't allow for logic or science.
“it’s possible that God created the Creation from nothing, therefore He did. If you disagree, prove me wrong.”
“it’s not impossible that God created the Creation from nothing, therefore He did. If you disagree, prove me wrong.”
Scientific arguments in favor of the Creation, the Genesis Flood, and a young Earth sometimes try to prove possibility rather than trying to prove that it actually happened. There are not scientific laws violated by any of these three historical accounts, so this isn't really a case of appeal to infinite possibilities. It is merely an appeal to possibilities. However, it is never necessary for a follower of Christ to appeal to possibility. Divine revelation gives us absolute evidence for all three of these historical events.
