In 2002, Al-Qaida terrorists planned to use shoe bombs to open a commercial jet's cockpit door, and then hijack the airplane. They then planned to re-route the airplane to the U. S. Bank Tower, the tallest building on the West Coast of the United States.
Using surveillance, over which many politicians have been in controversy, several countries worked in concert and avoided the disaster and loss of life. An al-Qaida terrorist was arrested in a Southeast Asian nation and the terror plot was foiled.
