Contrarian Argument Fallacy
The Contrarian Argument Fallacy occurs when a contrary argument is presented merely to be disagreeable, but there is no rational reason given for the argument.
Exception: When there is a reason for not believing what the majority believed, it is not a fallacy to reject the belief of the majority.
Examples of the Contrarian Argument Fallacy
An employee thinks that it is in his best interest to bring up objections to various plans. There is no reason to take the contrarian position.
A student decides that it would be funny to take the position that the Earth is indeed flat.
Internet trolling
It seems that it has become popular to troll for arguments just to get a reaction. Trolling on the Internet often involves pretense. Perhaps the people who used to deface buildings are now finding joy in disrupting communication on the Internet.
How can we know anything about anything? That’s the real question
