The Progression from Revelation to Denomination
A person or persons come to a close relationship with God.
God gives a revelation. What actually happens is that God pulls back the veil of the flesh enough that the individual can see into spiritual things. A good example is the revelation that was given to Martin Luther. "The just shall live by faith." A true revelation is always confirmed by Scripture and never conflicts with any part of Scripture.
Many are able to receive the revelation and many are not. Some respond with persecution. Some respond with joy, actually sharing in the original revelation and relationship with God. Some receive the dead letter of the revelation as a sort of mental exercise. "The letter killeth" 2 Corinthians 3:6
An organization begins to form to protect the revelation. Rather than moving on to higher heights and deeper depths in God, a conservation effort disallows any further revelation. Because the living and moving flow of God's Spirit has been cut off, the only thing that is left is the dead letter of the revelation.
Eventually, the organization takes on a life of its own with a power structure, a political structure, and money is being made. At this point, money, power, and prestige become most important. People are making their living here. Members are members because being a member shows them that they are better than non-members. They belong to the denomination that has it right. The organization exists for the benefits of the organization and the dead letter of the revelation becomes a selling point to help to propagate the organization. Even the dead letter is usually polluted by this point with many rationalized speculations to fill in the gaps that were not yet revealed.
The reality is that many of the non-denominational organizations are actually very small denominations. One of the goals of the Church is unity, but unity will only be achieved by a living relationship with the living Christ that causes Christians to hold their denominational ties very loosely and their speculative doctrines very loosely. It's very difficult for a person who knows it all to receive any revelation or understanding from the Lord.
How can we know anything about anything? That’s the real question
