Appeal to Nature

Logical Fallacy of Appeal to Nature

Appeal to nature is one of the many smokescreens that are used to cover the fact that the reasoning is based on one of the three fallacies of Agrippa's trilemma. Whenever a logical fallacy is committed, the fallacy has its roots in Agrippa's trilemma. All human thought (without Divine revelation) is based on one of three unhappy possibilities. These three possibilities are infinite regression, circular reasoning, or axiomatic thinking. This problem is known as Agrippa's trilemma. Some have claimed that only logic and math can be known without Divine revelation; however, that is not true. Without Divine revelation, neither logic nor math can be known. Science is also limited to the pragmatic because of the weakness on human reasoning, which is known as Agrippa's trilemma.

The logical fallacy of appeal to nature occurs when it is assumed that because something is natural it is OK or even preferred. Note that apostle Paul said, “Doesn’t nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair it is a shame to him?” Looking at the word, nature, in this instance, it means the nature of creation as opposed to what is monstrous, abnormal, or perverse. There are many other definitions of "natural." In terms of this fallacy, the meaning of "natural" is not always clear.

Fallacies that Sound Similar

There is the unnatural fallacy, the naturalistic fallacy, the proof by appeal to Naturalism, the fallacy of Naturalism, and the appeal to nature. You will find these fallacies all confused together in various sources. There seems to be no agreement. In addition, there are many definitions of the word, "natural." Although, it doesn't pay to get dogmatic about a certain definition, it would be nice to know what various authors are trying to say. Remember that the goal is to be able to tell truth from fiction.

Examples of the Logical Fallacy of Appeal to Nature

“It’s natural for men to want to look at women, dear. You can't hold that agaisnt me.“

The implication is that natural is OK, thus the logical fallacy of appeal to nature. The natural person is an enemy of God. Even for those who have been born again through belief in Jesus, they still have a natural mind that is fallen and in deception. In fact, the battle is for the mind to eventually have the mind of Christ through submission to the Holy Spirit instead of submission to the fleshly nature.

“Marijuana is all natural. Therefore, it is good.”

Again, this is the fallacy of Appeal to Nature.
