Psychologist\'s Fallacy

Psychologist's Fallacy

Whenever a logical fallacy is committed, the fallacy has its roots in Agrippa's trilemma. All human thought (without Divine revelation) is based on one of three unhappy possibilities. These three possibilities are infinite regression, circular reasoning, or axiomatic thinking. This problem is known as Agrippa's trilemma. Some have claimed that only logic and math can be known without Divine revelation; however, that is not true. Without Divine revelation, neither logic nor math can be known. Science is also limited to the pragmatic because of the weakness on human reasoning, which is known as Agrippa's trilemma. The psychologist's fallacy is one of the many smokescreens that are used to cover the fact that the reasoning is based on one of the three fallacies of Agrippa's trilemma.

The Psychologist's Fallacy occurs when an observer assumes that his/her subjective experience reflects the true nature of an event. This is closely related to the fallacy of using worldview as proof and with context imposition. The observer of an event, for instance, will tend to assume that his or her own memory of the event is objective. This can be a fallacy of projection, where a person thinks that he or she is perceiving the motivations or inner thoughts of another person, but projection is taking place; the person is projecting his or her own thoughts onto the other person and attributing those thought to that person. It may take the form of a person assuming that other people will respond an event, a comment, or some other stimulus, in the say way that the person would respond.

Examples of the Psychologist's Fallacy

Sandy accuses Rocky of being an idiot. Rocky is convinced that it isn't worth arguing about an ad hominem attack and doesn't respond. Sandy would have come back with a counter-attack, which Sandy considers to be the normal way that people would act. Sandy, then, assumes that he has intellectually overpowered Rocky with the force of his argument.
