Superstitious Thinking

Logical Fallacy of Superstitious Thinking / Magical Thinking

Superstitious thinking is one of the many smokescreens that are used to cover the fact that the reasoning is based on one of the three fallacies of Agrippa's trilemma. Whenever a logical fallacy is committed, the fallacy has its roots in Agrippa's trilemma. All human thought (without Divine revelation) is based on one of three unhappy possibilities. These three possibilities are infinite regression, circular reasoning, or axiomatic thinking. This problem is known as Agrippa's trilemma. Some have claimed that only logic and math can be known without Divine revelation; however, that is not true. Without Divine revelation, neither logic nor math can be known. Science is also limited to the pragmatic because of the weakness on human reasoning, which is known as Agrippa's trilemma.

The logical fallacy of superstitious thinking / magical thinking occurs when a belief does not follow from real evidence.

Examples of the Logical Fallacy of Superstitious Thinking / Magical Thinking

"Good luck with your interview."

This is superstitious thinking because it presupposes something called luck without proving that luck exists.

"Mother Nature is sending us rain tomorrow."

This is superstitious thinking because it presupposes something called luck without proving that luck exists.

"All living things have evolved from a single ancestor."

This is superstitious thinking because it presupposes something called evolution, which is a code word for the big-bang-billions-of-years-molecules-to-man story without proving that the big-bang-billions-of-years-molecules-to-man story ever took place.

Fallacy Abuse:

Roxanne: "Glory to God. I was suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, but I called for the elders of the Church. They laid hands on me, anointed me with oil, and prayed for me according to the order of James 5. Two people had a vision of the bone spurs dissolving. Within a few days, I could dress myself again. I went back to the doctor. He x-rayed me again and found that the bone spurs were gone. He couldn't understand it."

Sandra: "Ha! Ha! That is the logical fallacy of superstitious thinking."

Roxanne: "Perhaps you think that anything that you don't understand is a superstition?"

Sandra: "No. It's just that God is just a superstition, a belief based on nothing."

Roxanne: "Actually, the reason I know that God exists is because I personally know Jesus Christ, God. He leads me moment by moment and He is constantly teaching me. Not only that, but most of my friends have the same experience. Besides that, God reveals that those who refuse to acknowledge Him are without excuse because He has made His existence plain through the things that He has created."

Sandra: "That's superstitious thinking. Belief in God is like belief in the Easter Bunny."

Sandra has a belief in not God that is based on nothing at all. Sandra made a claim that God doesn't exist, but she has offered no proof for her claim. She has implied that Roxanne and her friends are not experiencing what they are experiencing. She is using proof by repeated assertion to make her case. There are plenty of logical fallacies here, but Sandra is the one who is using them. And Sandra is guilty of superstitious thinking.
