James |
James, the Lord's brother, shows how grace produces works that demonstrate that faith exists. 1. God's purpose in tests and temptations--wisdom--the problem of the double mind: mixing direction from God with direction from the fleshly mind, the source of temptation--faith obeys 2. faith directs away from showing partiality--faith has works that actually help others--faith without works is dead 3. not too many teachers--the power of the tongue to steer our course in life: the tongue is a fire, but faith can control the tongue--wisdom from above (also see 1 Cor. 1:31) 4. God's direction that results in faith will avoid conflicts among believers, but the mind directed by the flesh will cause desires that lead to sin--the answer: draw near to God and depend on Him in humility 5. the rich and the poor--patient waiting for God to move--the elders authority over sickness: anoint with oil, lay on hands, pray
